Introduction
When threat arrives, the body does not wait for permission. It acts. Before thought, before language, before the prefrontal cortex can weigh options, the survival brain takes over. Fight. Flight. Freeze. These are not choices—they are ancient, hardwired responses that have kept our species alive for millennia.
Chapter 4 invites us into the anatomy of survival, exploring how the body mobilizes in the face of danger and what happens when those survival responses cannot complete. Van der Kolk shows us that trauma is not what happens to us, but what remains trapped inside when the body's natural defensive strategies are thwarted. As you read, consider your own body's wisdom—the ways it has protected you, and the ways it may still be protecting you from threats that no longer exist.
When the Body Takes Over
Van der Kolk describes the survival responses with precision and compassion. When we perceive danger, the sympathetic nervous system floods the body with stress hormones—adrenaline and cortisol—preparing us to fight or flee. Heart rate accelerates. Breathing quickens. Blood flows to large muscle groups. The body becomes an instrument of survival, focused entirely on the present threat.
But what happens when fighting is futile and escape is impossible? The body has a third option: freeze. This immobilization response, mediated by the dorsal vagal branch of the parasympathetic nervous system, is not weakness or cowardice. It is a profound biological strategy—playing dead, conserving energy, numbing pain, dissociating from unbearable experience.
The problem arises when these survival responses cannot complete. A child who cannot fight back or run away remains frozen; the energy of defense locked in the body. A soldier who survives an ambush may carry the incomplete impulse to fight or flee for years. The body remembers what the mind tries to forget, and that memory lives in muscle tension, hypervigilance, and the constant readiness to respond to danger that is no longer present.
Contemplative Reflection
What does it mean to recognize that our survival responses are not failures but ancient wisdom? The body that froze, the impulse to fight that never found release, the urge to flee that was thwarted—these are not signs of weakness. They are evidence of the body's fierce commitment to keeping us alive.
Consider your own survival patterns. Do you find yourself constantly ready to fight—defending, arguing, bracing against perceived threats? Or do you notice the impulse to flee—avoiding conflict, leaving relationships before they deepen, staying perpetually in motion? Perhaps you recognize the freeze response—numbing out, dissociating, feeling paralyzed when stress arrives. These patterns are not character flaws. They are your nervous system's best attempt to protect you.
The invitation here is not to override these responses but to befriend them. What would it mean to thank your body for the ways it has kept you safe? To acknowledge the freeze response that allowed you to survive what could not be fought or escaped? To honor the hypervigilance that scanned for danger when danger was real?
And yet, befriending does not mean remaining stuck. The body that learned to freeze can learn to move again—slowly, gently, with support. Begin with small movements: stretch your arms overhead, press your feet into the ground, shake out your hands. These simple actions help discharge the survival energy that remains trapped. Notice what happens in your body when you allow movement that was once forbidden.
For those caught in perpetual fight or flight, the work is different. It requires learning to down-regulate, to signal safety to a nervous system that has forgotten what safety feels like. Slow, deep breathing—particularly extending the exhale—activates the ventral vagal system, the branch of the nervous system responsible for social engagement and rest. Place your hand on your belly and breathe as though you are filling a vessel from the bottom up. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale. This is not just relaxation—it is retraining.
Finally, reflect on the incompleteness van der Kolk describes. Where in your life do you sense unfinished business—the argument you couldn't have, the boundary you couldn't set, the escape you couldn't make? Trauma healing often involves completing these interrupted actions in safe, supported ways. This might look like speaking the words you couldn't say, pushing against a wall to feel your strength, or practicing saying "no" when you have always said "yes."
The body holds the map. Our work is to learn its language and follow where it leads.
